There are different reasons, including medical, that will cause a cat not to use their litter box, but one of the main reasons a cat won’t use a litter box is because it stinks! A cat’s sense of smell is a lot better than a human’s and almost as powerful as a dog’s. If a litter box is dirty and stinks, your cat will probably find some other place to do its business.
One of the ways you can help keep your cat’s litter box safely smelling fresh and clean between cleanings is to use a litter box additive. Some additives can cause harm to your cat’s lungs, but there is one that is environmentally friendly, safe, and that won’t interrupt good litter box habits and behaviors.

Here are some reviews written about Nilolitter.
“I can’t believe I’m writing a review for cat litter deodorizer, but this stuff is amazing. Just a little sprinkle every few days keeps litter smelling fresh. I used to use Arm and Hammer. It didn’t work well, and had a heavy perfumy smell. You had to use quite a bit to mask litter box odors, and I clean my cat’s box every day. This deodorizer leaves a fresh clean scent, and you use very little of it. I still scoop out the litter every day, but I change the cat’s litter less frequently now. Great product, highly recommend for litter boxes that are in small spaces.”
“This controls odors better than the other stuff I’ve tried —-and with six cats I”ve tried ’em all! The initial fragrance is a little strong–sort of piney–but it after a day it gets milder. None of the cats seem to mind it. I introduced it in a couple of the litter boxes to see whether they would avoid the fragrance but they used those boxes as much as the others. So I’m using it in all the boxes now. Just a tablespoon in each box is enough.
The container says it’s good in trash bins, too, but I haven’t tried that yet.”
“Our cats have kidney and urinary tract issues, putting a great strain on the litter box … and making keeping litter clean a challenge, if not an impossibility. That said, this product helps, at least in the short term, by providing an instantly pleasant odor, and helps prolong the urgency of litter cleaning at least a bit.”
“It has a strong minty, kind of evergreen scent. I like it. When the scent dissipates everything is fine. I use very little to do the job. I think one container is going to last me almost a year.”
“We wanted to stop using the clay litter and switched to Worlds Best Cat Litter. The litter is great but when the kitties went #2 and they did bury it there was an odor. After adding this to the litter boxes it really does help. I would recommend this if you want to switch from the clay litters and decide to go with a corn or wheat litter.”
